How a College Football Playoff Could Work

This year more than any year a playoff in Division I is needed.  Why because we have 3 mid-major teams undefeated and they should have a chance at the national title.  Now I know a lot of the fans of the BCS conference schools say no way they aren't good enough etc. etc.  But if these schools are going to be classified as Division I schools they they should have an equal chance at the National Title.  All Division I schools in all other sports have that chance why not Football?   The other major reason that we don't have a playoff in Division I is because of the Bowl games.  Well guess what we can use the bowls as the playoffs.

Here is how I have it worked out.

You need 15 bowl games total to run a 16 team playoff.  That will leave16 bowl games for non-playoff teams

I took the top 15 paying bowls and added their payoff it came to over 133 million dollars so I bumped the kitty up to 134 million.  Then I looked at the bowls and stated the following would be first round playoff games.  The 11 Division 1 Conference champions would get an automatic bid along with 5 at large teams.  This would insure that the BCS schools would more than likely get more than 1 bid.  When would the games be played?  Well they could start the weekend before Christmas ending up on or around New Years day or, they could start christmas weekend, Quarter finals during New Years, Semi - Finals the week after with the finals the weekend before the Superbowl.

Here are the 1st round games

  • Cotton
  • Gator
  • Outback
  • Holiday
  • Alamo
  • Champs Sports
  • Sun
  • Liberty

The loser of the first round would get 5.25 million

The Quarter final Bowls -

  • Fiesta
  • Sugar
  • Orange
  • Rose
  • Capital 1
  • Chick-fil-A

Now the big 4 , Fiesta, Sugar, Orange and Rose would rotate between the Quarter Finals and Semi-Finals - Losing team gets 7.5 Million

Semi -Finals

  • Fiesta
  • Sugar
  • Rose
  • Orange

Losing team gets 10 Million

National Championship Game - On a rotating basis as it is now.

Losing team gets 20 Million

Winner gets 22 Million.

Again this allows all Division 1 team with a chance to play for the national title.
