Mikeyfan's mid season report card (Ford)

Well, I got a lot of comments on my chevy Grades,  So let's see how I grade myself for the Ford Teams.

Starting with Roush Racing here is what I predicted:

Outlook for Roush Racing - With Carl Edwards and his talent Roush Racing should contend for the championship, the question really is how many cars with Roush field in the Chase.  This is Fords only hope in NASCAR and therefore, I see all the engineering help from Ford going to this team.

Roush currently has their three mainstays in the chase in Carl, Matt and Greg,  Jamie is in 19th but David is having a rough time in 30th.
So I think I did pretty good, Initially I said 2 drivers with Carl and Matt with Greg the wild card.  The wild card this year is RCR and their troubles.

Grade:  B:  I gave myself a B because anyone of the 3 could fall out of the chase with the points being this close and Carl not having won a race could be considered a major upset at this time.

Outlook for the remainder of the season:  Matt and Greg are the most vunderable for missing the chase and I think one of them will.  Roush seems to be a step behind where they were this time last year.

Next up Yates Racing

Here is what I had to say:

I pretty much nailed this one,  Bobby is sitting 27th in points and Paul is 31st.  Maybe they should have kept Travis Kvapil.

Grade:  A:  With these 2 struggling like I predicted I gave myself my first "A"

Outlook for the remainder of the season:  I don't see any improvement from this team and it's a shame because Yates used to be the powerhouse Ford team in NASCAR.

Last was the Wood Brothers and my prediction for them:

The outlook for the Wood Brothers is still the same but I will admit Bill Elliott has run fairly well when they do enter a race.

Grade:  B:  I gave myself a "B" because we still haven't seen what is going to happen with this team in the future.

Well, there you have it my mid season report card for Ford.  How did I do?  Let me know

Outlook for Wood Brothers Racing   The Wood Brothers are at a crossroads this year.  Will they survive the cutbacks and the economic down turn?  Will they be able to survive only running a part time schedule?  Will they be able to secure sponsorship for the future?  Only the future can really tell us, here's hoping this team does survive and we will see them compete for wins again in the near future.

Outlook for Robert Yates Racing - I don't see any team from this organization competing for a spot in the chase.  In fact if both cars stay in the top 25 and get the bonus money at the end of the season they will have accomplished a lot, as not only is the funding not really there but the manufacture support will be at Roush and very little if any will be passed down to RYR.

Contender or Pretender as we head into the Chase

I know we still have a week to go prior to the chase starting but I figured I'd give everyone a head start on their thoughts as to who was the real contenders for the cup and who were just in the chase and along for the ride.  Oh, I realize my thought will probably piss some off but then I wouldn't be Mikeyfan if I didn't upset some.

Kyle Bush - Contender - Kyle will start the chase off in the points lead.  Kyle has been strong all season and there is no reason to expect that he will slow down during the chase.  Of course there are those from a certain "NATION" that are hoping he falls on his face but with JGR equipment and his momentum I just don't see it happening.

Carl Edwards - Contender - Carl like Kyle has a lot of momentum coming into the chase and with 3 of the races being on the cookie cutter tracks that he seems to excel at he has a very good chance to win this.

Jimmy Johnson - Contender - Current Sprint Cup Champion,  started this season on the slow side but his team has picked it up since Daytona in July.  Look for Jimmy to have some very Strong Runs and be a contender all they way through Miami.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. - Pretender - Since Dales win at Michigan his highest finish has been 11th and in these races he really hasn't been a contender the latter part of the race.  Rick Hendrick gave the "Nation" what he promised.  A win for Junior, now its time to concentrate on his Champions and push for another title.

Jeff Burton - Pretender - Jeff is Mr. Consistency but when it comes to crunch time I just don't think he has it in him to go all out for it and the heck with the other drivers.   Jeff reminds me a lot of Mark Martin, good driver but just can't make himself move that driver in front of hime to get those extra points need to win a championship.

Greg Biffle - Pretender - Jack Roush will be putting all of his efforts behind his best chance to win a championship and that will be Carl Edwards.  Greg just will do what he can to make a good showing but I don't believe the support, outside of his team, will be there.

Kevin Harvick - Wild Card - Kevin is a driver that could be a Pretender or a Contender.  The first couple of races will tell it all for Kevin.  However, he has the best chance of the RCR cars to win it all this year.

Tony Stewart - Wild Card - Tony is my second and last Wild Card in the chase - It will all depend on where his head is at,  Will it be on this season or next years new team.  It will also depend on JGR,  Will they give him equipment to win?  Tony has the fire and like Kevin I believe the first couple of races will decide if he is a Contender or Pretender.

Matt Kenseth - Contender - Although Matt is behind Gregg Biffle, this will be Jack's second choice to push for another championship.  A couple of reasons for this.  One Matt is a better overall driver and Two, Jack is going to want to show Matt that he is a major force in his shop.  Matt will be a free agent after next season and rumor has it Matt is not happy and will leave after next season.  So Jack is going to give it his all to try to keep Matt after next season.

Jeff Gordon - Contender - This may shock a lot of folks, Those who know me on the auto boards know I'm not a big Jeff Gordon Fan,  However, I have learned that you don't count Jeff out.  Sure he has had a subpar season for Jeff and a lot of his fans are jumping ship or questioning his desire or Crew Chief, but to count him out in the chase would be saying you don't know anything about NASCAR.  Jeff is a champion with a Champions heart and until he is totally out of it, he will have a chance to win it all, if you know what I mean.

Denny Hamlin - Contender - This is a hot head who has the talent to catch fire.  He has the driving ability to take off like Kyle did earlier this year and have a run of 10 top 7 runs and win this thing.

Clint Bowyer - Pretender - Clint will be satisfied with making the chase.  He got his only win last year in the chase and could get another this year, but it will be too little too late.

David Regan - Pretender - Yes he has been driving well the last few weeks, and yes he is looking good, but he has a couple of things going against him.  One - he will be satisfied that he made the chase, this is more than this team expected, Two - Jack will be concentrating on his top 2 drivers, Carl and Matt

Kasey Kane - Pretender - If Kasey makes the chase, I think he will end up around 7th or 8th in the final standings but I don't believe he will be a contender.  Too inconsistent.

Coming up on 1/3 point of the season

Well race fans here we are approximately 1/3 of the way through the season and there have been a few surprises, a few just so/so things going on and of course some disappointments.  So here is your chance to list your thoughts on the season so far.  I am listing my Surprises, So-So's and Disappointments this year in decending order.  In other words a countdown in each category and I invite you to do the same along with a brief statement as to why that item is in the column you placed it.

So here we go and I look forward to reading your comments:

Disappointments:

4.  Dale Earnhardt Jr. - Here we go, Mikeyfan bashing Dale Junior once again right?, No, Dale Junior is having a very, very good year right now, the disappointment would be that he hasn't won yet. (Don't worry Junior fans you will see this name again)

3. Yate Sponsorship - Robert Yates Racing is an organization that has been around for quite a while and with two young drivers are having problems with sponsorship and that's a shame.  Jack Roush promised Yates sponsorship help, but where is it?

2.  Everham Motorsports - This is an organization that came out of the box real fast when they first moved to Dodge, Now they appear to be just a solid top 25 team.  This organization need to get it into gear.

1.  Open Wheel Drivers - With the success of Juan Pablo Montoya, there was a lot of hype of the Open Wheel drivers invading NASCAR.  Penske even went as far as giving Sam Hornish a leg up on his competition by giving him the points from the 2 team.  Problem is Sam is now in the Go or Go home category along with the rest of the Open Wheelers.  So much for open wheel domination.

So - So's

4.  Red Bull Racing - I placed Red Bull Here because of the way Brian Vickers is running, yes Red Bull is having trouble with the 84 car but they did get the 83 into the top 20 at 17th so for that I have them on the verge of breaking into the Surprises.

3.  MWR - Yes, Mikey and company fall here, in my opinion.  You may of thought I would have had them in my surprises but alas I can't put them there because they are still on the verge of falling into the clutches of the "Go or Go Home".  I am happy they haven't missed a race but now I'm waiting for them to start making solid top 20 to top 10 runs.

2. Jeff and JJ - Who would have thought that Jeff would have been shut out so far this season and JJ is very up and down.  This disappointment led me to my most So-So performance so far.

1. HMS - Yes HMS is the most So-So performer this year.  The way they dominated the first part of last season and how they have run so far this seaason I think this is the proper place for them  Expections for this organization is very high and they just haven't reached that plateau yet.  And yes the 5 car is, well the 5 car.

Surprises:

4. Ryan Newman - I have Ryan here not so much because of the season he is having but who would have thougtht Ryan would win the Daytona 500?  I know I wouldn't have accepted a bet for his winning it all, would you?

3. Dale Earnhardt Jr. -  Dale Junior is a solid driver and is on a solid team, however, to say he would be in the top 5 in points at this time I think is surprising.  A top 10, say 8th to 10th maybe not, but his runs have been consistent and solid.

2. Carl Edwards - Where did Carl come from this year.  He has dominated the Cookie Cutter Tracks and if it wasn't for my number 1 selection he would be far far ahead of his competition.  This leads me to my biggest surprise so far this year.

1. Kyle, you can hate me, Bush - (like the nickname?)  It was always known that Kyle was a good driver, maybe overagressive at times but a good driver.  His off track behavior has a lot to be desired but I don't think anyone can say they expected Kyle to be this good this soon at JGR, especially since JGR just moved from Chevy to Toyota.
